SEE how Buhari, others celebrated Nigeria's 56th anniversary

President Muhammadu Buhari released white pigeons, a symbol of peace as Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Senate president, Bukola Saraki watched.



The president also signed the anniversary register. He was assisted by some top dignitaries to cut the anniversary cake.



This is the second independence anniversary Buhari wiil be celebrating since he came to power on May 29, 2015.


Those in attendance were former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Vice Presidents Alex Ekwueme and Namadi Sambo, other top government dignitaries and members of the diplomatic corps.

The 56th independence anniversary was celebrated in a low-key fashion.

Since October 1, 2010 when the anniversary celebration was marred by bomb blasts at the Eagle Square, Abuja, all subsequent anniversaries have been celebrated in the presidential villa.
