Government declares Tuesday as public holiday

Tuesday, October 4, has been declared as a public holiday by the Kano state government, Vanguard reports.

The holiday, reports confirmed, is to mark the beginning of the new Islamic calendar 1438 A.H. which coincided with the annual commemoration of Nigeria’s 56th independence anniversary.

On Friday, September 30, there was a prayer session at the state house in Kano to herald the new Islamic year, just as Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje showed love to some of his people by visiting hospitals in the state capital to sympathise with the ill, while also praying for their speedy recovery.

He therefore appealed to Muslim faithful to ease the socio-economic challenges facing the country during the period when they would be on break.

The federal government had earlier declared Monday, October 3 as a public holiday to celebrate Nigeria’s independence day anniversary since the October 1 annual date for the celebration fell on a Saturday.

In a statement signed on Thursday, September 29 by Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido who is the acting permanent secretary in the Ministry of Interior, the federal government congratulated Nigerians.

The statement read: “The Minister of Interior, Lt Gen (rtd) Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, while making the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulates Nigerians at home and abroad on the commemoration of this year’s independence anniversary and assures them that Government is working assiduously to put in place various palliative measures to cushion the effects of the current economic challenges.

“The minister enjoins all Nigerians to continue to support President Muhammadu Buhari in his avowed determination to build a strong, virile and united country in line with the dream of the country’s founding fathers.
